GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES THE EXTENSION OF THE APPOINTMENT OF THE USHER OF THE BLACK ROD

Ottawa, Ontario

The Honourable Marjory LeBreton, Leader of the Government in the Senate, announced today a three-month extension of Terrance Christopher's appointment as Usher of the Black Rod. Mr. Christopher's current five year term expires on December 8, 2007.

"Mr. Christopher has served the members of the Senate with great dedication and diligence throughout his mandate and I am pleased he has agreed to stay on while the government launches an open selection process to appoint a new Usher of the Black Rod", said Ms. LeBreton.

The Usher of the Black Rod is an officer of the Senate and is responsible for security in the Senate Chamber. The Black Rod leads the daily Speaker's Parade to and from the Senate Chamber. The Usher of the Black Rod also directs all protocol, logistical and administrative details regarding openings of Parliament and carries out ceremonial duties related to the installation of the Governor General, the Royal Assent of bills and state funerals.

The appointment is effective December 9, 2007 and will end on March 7, 2008.
