STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER ON THE DEATH OF FORMER KING ZAHIR SHAH

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following statement on the death of former Afghan King Mohammad Zahir Shah:

"I was saddened today to learn of the passing of His Majesty Mohammad Zahir Shah, Father of the Nation. I would like to convey my deepest and sincere condolences to the government of Afghanistan, to the family of His Majesty, Mohammad Zahir Shah, and to all Afghans.

The former King will be remembered for his dedication to improving the quality of life for all Afghans and for his commitment to Afghan unity. He led Afghanistan through a period of reform and modernisation. His Majesty's passing serves to remind us of the need to remain committed to the security, development, and unity of Afghanistan.

Canada stands with Afghanistan and Afghans in this time of national mourning."
