Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Saskatchewan Premier Allan Blakeney

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of former Saskatchewan Premier Allan Blakeney:

"On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Allan Blakeney.

"For more than a decade Mr. Blakeney worked to strengthen social programs and faced tough economic challenges.

"On the national stage, Mr. Blakeney played a key role in the patriation of the Constitution.

" A man strongly committed to the principles of democracy and the rule of law, Mr. Blakeney went on to serve as Bora Laskin Chair in Public Law at Osgoode Hall and Law Foundation Chair at the University of Saskatchewan. He also helped develop structures for democratic government in South Africa following the dismantling of apartheid.

"Mr. Blakeney's dedication to public service has made Saskatchewan and Canada a better place to live. His efforts will long be remembered and honoured."
