PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGE IN THE SENIOR RANKS OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE

January 17, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service:

Suzanne Tining, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Executive Director and Deputy Head of the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada, becomes Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs. She succeeds Jack Stagg who passed away in August 2006, following a valiant battle with cancer.

Peter Harrison, currently Executive Director of the Public Appointments Commission Secretariat, becomes Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Executive Director and Deputy Head of the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to acknowledge Mr. Stagg’s many contributions to the Public Service during a career that spanned over 30 years. A highly-regarded and trusted leader, Mr. Stagg served Canadians with great skill, dedication and enthusiasm. His presence has been, and will continue to be, sorely missed by leaders at all levels of the Public Service.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to thank Verna Bruce, Associate Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs, for her sound and steady leadership of the department of Veterans Affairs while the position of Deputy Minister has been vacant.

These appointments are effective January 22, 2007.
