PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER JOINS QUEBEC MILITARY FAMILIES IN TRIBUTE TO TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN

August 18, 2007
LÉVIS, QUEBEC

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today joined thousands of Quebecers, including family members of Quebec-based soldiers serving in Afghanistan, for the 8th annual Twilight Concert and Pyromusical Show at the Lévis Forts National Historic Site of Canada.

In a speech delivered in the courtyard of the restored 19th century fort, Prime Minister Harper noted that Quebec's famed Royal 22nd "Vandoos" regiment – based at nearby CFB Valcartier – now leads the Canadian mission in the Kandahar region of southern Afghanistan. "Quebecers, in particular, can be very proud of the women and men of the Royal 22nd who are writing another glorious page in the history of this regiment," the Prime Minister said. "Thanks to the valiant efforts of our troops and allies, life is slowly but surely returning to normal for Afghans."

The Prime Minister concluded his speech by paying tribute to, as well as highlighted the importance of, families, friends, and the communities of military members who support the troops back in Canada.
