Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

November 25, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today made the following statement on the decision by Danny Williams to step down as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador:

"Premier Williams has been a dominating force in Newfoundland and Labrador politics since becoming leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001.

"A tireless champion for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Williams accomplished a great deal in his seven years as Premier.

"His enormous popularity in the province is a tribute to his hard work and commitment, and his very personal connection to the people.

"His caring, devotion and leadership were very much on display in the aftermath of Hurricane Igor when both our governments worked to help Newfoundland and Labrador rebuild after the storm.

"I congratulate Premier Williams for his years of hard work and dedicated public service and I wish him well in his future endeavours."
