Forty-four police personnel commended for exceptional service to Canada

May 19, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Forty-four Canadians were praised today by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, for their longstanding commitment to public safety and their communities.

“These men and women have dedicated their lives to ensuring Canada’s families are safe, our communities are strong and our country more secure. And every day they bring to their job qualities that are the essence of what makes Canada a great nation – values, commitment and determination,” said the Prime Minister. “On the occasion of Police Week 2006, I would like to pay tribute to these outstanding individuals on behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians.”

This morning, Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, invested forty-four Canadians into the Order of Merit of Police Forces. Recipients included twenty personnel from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, seven from the Sûreté du Québec, three from the Ottawa Police Service, two from both the Edmonton Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, and one each from the following forces: Midland (Ontario), Nishnawbe-Aski (Ontario), York Regional (Ontario), Durham Regional (Ontario), Amherstburg (Nova Scotia), Brandon (Manitoba), Charlottetown (P.E.I), Peterborough (Ontario), Camrose (Alberta) and Gatineau (Quebec).

The Order was created in October 2000 to recognize exceptional service by members and employees of the Canadian police forces whose contributions extend beyond protection of the community. Today, fifteen officers and 29 members were invested.
