Statement by Prime Minister Harper congratulating Ireland's new Prime Minister, Enda Kenny

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement after Enda Kenny was appointed the new Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoiseach):

"On behalf of our Government, I am pleased to offer my sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Enda Kenny on his appointment as Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoiseach).

"Our two countries enjoy close relations based on family ties ─ millions of Canadians claim some Irish ancestry ─ cultural affinities, and shared democratic political traditions. I look forward to working with the new Government of Ireland on strengthening the bonds between our two nations and on addressing the pressing global challenges of the day.

"I would also like to congratulate all incoming Members of Parliament on their election victories."

PM accepts the invitation to attend the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mrs. Laureen Harper today announced they have graciously accepted the invitation to attend the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton. The ceremony will take place on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London.

"Canada is one of sixteen realm countries in the Commonwealth and I am delighted that Laureen and I will be able to attend this very historic and happy moment," said the Prime Minister. "We are honoured to represent Canada in order to personally convey the best wishes of all Canadians to the happy couple exactly three months before they undertake a Royal Tour of Canada – their first outside the United Kingdom as newlyweds. Both events will be the source of great celebration for Canadians from coast to coast to coast," the Prime Minister added.

Additional details regarding the Prime Minister's attendance at the Royal Wedding will be announced at a later date.

The Royal Tour will take place from June 30 to July 8, 2011 and will include Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and the National Capital Region.
