Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Senator Norman Atkins

September 30, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of former Senator Norman Atkins:

"On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Senator Norman Atkins.

"A legendary political organizer for numerous provincial and federal elections since the 1950s – including the Ontario and national Progressive Conservative parties –, Mr. Atkins was also a respected senator with a profound commitment to the country he served and loved. In 2007, he was elected vice-chairman of the Senate's National Security and Defence Committee.

"His devotion to tolerance, moderation and meeting local community needs will be remembered and deeply missed."
