PRIME MINISTER HARPER EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES TO PEOPLE OF CHINA

May 19, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Harper today expressed, on behalf of Canada, his deep sadness and heartfelt sympathy with the Chinese people suffering as a result of the earthquake in China's Sichuan province last week.

"Canada joins with China as it mourns the tens of thousands of lives lost. We wish a swift recovery to all those who were injured in the earthquake.

The thoughts and prayers of the Canadian people are and will continue to be with the people of China throughout this ordeal.

I have written to President Hu to convey my sympathy and to commend the rapid and transparent rescue efforts and the spontaneous solidarity among the Chinese people."

On Friday, May 16, the Government of Canada announced a $1-million contribution to support the emergency response of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC). Canada will also match individual donations to humanitarian organizations.
