STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER ON THE DEATH OF A CANADIAN SOLDIER

April 19, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan:

"It is with great sadness that I learned that a Canadian soldier died yesterday from injuries he sustained in an accident while working on a communications tower in Afghanistan.

This soldier served our country with distinction and honour. On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, my deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends and comrades during this time of mourning.

Canadian soldiers have made great contributions to the people of Afghanistan by helping them to secure and rebuild this war-torn country. Not only are they providing hope to the shattered lives of many Afghans – but they are also protecting Canadians and Canada from terrorist threats.

The people of Canada strongly support the Canadian Forces in their role as representatives of Canada in the world, helping keep Canadians safe."

The name of the soldier is being withheld at the request of the family.
