Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of Néstor Kirchner

October 27, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of Néstor Kirchner, former President of Argentina. Mr Kirchner was also the spouse of Argentina's current President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

"I was deeply saddened to learn today of the sudden passing of former President Néstor Kirchner.

"Néstor Kirchner was deeply committed to his country and to advancing peace and regional integration in Latin America, as evidenced by his recent appointment as Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations.

"His passing is a significant loss to Argentina and the region. His achievements are many, including the stability that he provided to Argentina during his tenure as President from 2003 to 2007, as well as his commitment to human rights.

"On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to his wife, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, their two children, Máximo and Florencia, and to the Argentine people.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Argentina today."
