STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

September 20, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today:

"The Government of Canada condemns the bomb attack on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad and the appalling loss of life and injuries it has caused to so many innocent people.

The Government and people of Canada extend their deepest sympathies to the families of the dead and injured.

The use of violence and terror against innocent civilians must never be tolerated and we condemn those who have perpetrated this terrible act.

The Government of Canada continues to stand beside the Government and people of Pakistan in their fight against extremism and terror.

There are no known Canadian casualties at this time but Canadian High Commission is monitoring situation closely."
